Should AI Be Cited? No. Should AI Be Mentioned? Sometimes.

When writing in collaboration with AI, I recommend these simple practices.

  1. Never cite AI or refer to it as a source. Everything AI does is a derivative of other sources, so AI cannot be a source. You may ask it what the underlying source is, and then cite this.

  2. Mention how AI was used if it is material. If humans had participated in the effort so extensively that they would be mentioned, then AI participation should be mentioned if it participated at this lebel. AI deserves as much mention as humans, neither more or less. For example:

    • AI was used for extensive brainstorming.
    • AI was used to generate the entire document.

That AI is always used is today implicit so there is no reason to mention it. Only the deep use warrants a mention.
